Sean Quinlan proves an able deputy as he judges things to perfection on Zig Zag

One of the features of northern jumping in the last few weeks has been the excellent form of Phil Kirby's team, and the trainer maintained his fine run when Zig Zag gained a battling win over favourite Wishfull Dreaming in the 2m handicap hurdle.

Kirby's regular rider Adam Nicol is out of action having broken a leg in a fall at Musselburgh on New Year's Day, but Sean Quinlan is proving an able substitute, and arguably this win was down to him as he dictated the gallop and kept enough in reserve to prevail by half a length in a driving finish.

The winning trainer said: "It's bad luck for Adam as he'd have been on him, but that was a great ride from Sean. This horse has kept being beaten in races with no pace, so I told Sean to do his own thing and he got it just right."
