Rachael Blackmore got every decision right at this Cheltenham Festival - bar one
All week long, Rachael Blackmore was making one great decision after another and she reaped benefits to make any jockey green with envy, including a massively enhanced reputation, new fans all over the world, a handy bit of padding in the bank account and some more prized knick-knacks for the mantelpiece. Surely she must allow herself a long smile of contentment on the flight home.
But it must be acknowledged her week could still have been better had she made just one decision differently. It was aeons ago, on Monday morning, that she pledged allegiance to A Plus Tard in the Gold Cup rather than Minella Indo. It was the sensible call, whether judged against ratings, recent form or available odds, but, as it turns out, jumping the other way would have been her crowning moment of genius.
On the upside, it means she will retain the gnawing, productive hunger of unfulfilled ambition when she returns in future years. She is not yet in the dreadful position of Alexander The Great, with no worlds left to conquer.
