It did not take long for Keith Puddick to make up his mind. “I’m off” said the layer as he packed up his rails pitch after the first race. "I’ve taken three bets. I took £30. I’m going to Kempton.”

Two pitches away from Puddick, Goodwin Racing fared little better, with six wagers on the opening handicap chase, won by Bredon Hill Lad.

"That's very poor," said layer David Rondeau. "I took £70. I'd normally be looking at more than 50 bets."
