Pollyanna sitting pretty at head of 1,000 Guineas market after Newmarket blitz

Less than 24 hours after Goddess laid down a marker for the 1,000 Guineas with a ten-length victory in a maiden at Leopardstown, Pretty Pollyanna delivered a powerful riposte with a stunning success in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes.

In a race in which Frankie Dettori picked up a ten-day ban for his ride on Angel's Hideaway, Michael Bell's filly avoided the in-running problems that befell the two market leaders, La Pelosa and Main Edition, to surge clear under Silvestre de Sousa and rocket to the head of the market for next year's Newmarket Classic.

She is now as short as 10-1 for the 1,000 Guineas with Ladbrokes (from 33) and also heads the market with Coral and Paddy Power at 12-1.

Named after owner Bill Gredley's daughter Polly, who is married to Newmarket trainer George Scott, Pretty Pollyanna had finished fifth behind Main Edition in the Albany last time out but turned that form around in spectacular style.

"She's been working very nicely and has clearly improved from Ascot," Bell said. "That was a very good performance and I'd like to say she'd only improve but she probably doesn't need to."

When asked about Classic aspirations, Gredley said: "She's got a chance. She's bred for the mile, I hope, and I thought the hill would help her today."
