Metal Man makes long journey worthwhile for in-form Rebecca Menzies
Tuesday: Lingfield
The near 600-mile round trip for the Rebecca Menzies-trained Metal Man paid off as the six-year-old stayed on strongest to land the 2m handicap under Callum Shepherd.
Having run over 3m in a novice chase at Hexham two starts ago, the former Gordon Elliott-trained runner demonstrated his versatility to provide Menzies with a first winner at the track.
The trainer, although not making the journey from her Durham base to Surrey, was pleased to reward Metal Man’s owners, the Breath Of Fresh Air Racing syndicate. She said: "They’re an enthusiastic bunch of owners and they are based all over the country.
"It was quite nice that as he’d been running in the north, we’ve been able to give the southern connections a chance to go racing and see him. Zoe, who looks after Metal Man, took him down last night and it was brilliant that he got the job done."
It was a third winner from Menzies’s fourth runner of the new year and the in-form dual-purpose trainer added: "Christmas was excellent. We’ve had plenty of winners over jumps and it’s just nice to see two of the first three Flat horses we’ve run have won, so we can’t complain!"
Prolific Probert strikes
David Probert demonstrated why he leads the standings in the all-weather jockeys' championship as he followed up Monday's double at the course with another winner, guiding the Mark Usher-trained Arlecchino's Gift to a first win at the tenth attempt in the 6f handicap. It was the three-year-old's first start since being gelded.
