Just one shade of grey for Muir as Mitrosonfire hits the target

William Muir won with his first runner in the unique Grey Horse Handicap when Mitrosonfire struck a blow for the Classic generation.

The ten-strong field featured three previous winners of the event on the July course, including last year's winner My Style, who fared best of the trio in finishing fourth.

Mitrosonfire, the 5-2 favourite, reappeared seven days after a win in the Shergar Cup at Ascot and extended the good record of market leaders in the race when holding off Wentworth Falls under Stefano Cherchi.

Muir, who trains the winner in partnership with Chris Grassick, said: "I've never had a runner in this race before, but now I think it's a great concept!"

He added: "I was driving up here thinking I was going to pull him out as he likes soft ground, but fair play to Michael Prosser [clerk of the course], he's done a good job with the watering."

As to targets, Muir said: "He's had a busy spell, so we'll give him a break now; but who knows, he could be back for another crack at this next year."

Eileen's wait is over

Classy bumper performer Eileendover landed a first victory at the fourth attempt on the Flat when running out a decisive winner of the 1m6f handicap under Shane Kelly.

Successful trainer Pam Sly will not be tempted into returning her four-year-old to jumps this winter and may well target a Group 2 at Doncaster next month now she has worked out the filly's best trip.

Sly said: "We've tried her over a mile and a half a couple of times but she seems to have appreciated this longer trip and looked to have outstayed them.

"Rab Havlin suggested we run her in the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster and we may go there, although she could do with some juice in the ground."

Two from two

Pat Owens maintained his 100 per cent record at the course when Adnaan made his experience count in the opening 6f novice stakes under Ben Curtis.

The 6-4 favourite was gaining just reward for a number of decent placed efforts when seeing off newcomer Laheg to supplement the win of his stablemate Adday To Remember at the track a fortnight ago.

Owens is located in what at one time was the safest yard in Newmarket just across the road from the former police station in part of the St Gatien set-up.

He said: "It's called the Authorized yard as it's where he stood when he won the Derby, although there's no plaque up yet.

"Adnaan really deserved that and thanks to owner Khalifa Dasmal for supporting me. I've only eight horses in at the moment, although there's room for 24 and hopefully I can get a few more at the sales."

The former pre-trainer added: "We'll regroup with this fellow but the plan is to bring Adaay To Remember back here for the Listed Hopeful Stakes in a fortnight's time."

Curtis later bookended the card when First Dance won the closing mile fillies' handicap.

Hot list

Jack Mitchell stayed on the hot list and took his strike rate for Charlie Appleby past 50 per cent when Bandinelli ground out a first win on turf in the 1m4f handicap.

The 3-1 chance was overcoming a near two-month layoff to give Godolphin another winner at the July course, where Appleby is often leading trainer.

Mitchell said: "The first-time cheekpieces have helped him and if the second had come at him again, I'm sure he would have pulled out a bit more."
