'It'll be hard to top that' - Haynes on a high after Mr Professor strikes

Alice Haynes: Listed win thrilled the trainer
Alice Haynes: Listed win thrilled the trainer

Alice Haynes has had a fine first season training and it got even better when Mr Professor outsmarted his rivals in the Listed Silver Tankard Stakes.

Owned by Amo Racing and ridden by Silvestre de Sousa, the juvenile went off a 16-1 shot and proved a neck too good for 8-11 favourite Westover.

"That is fantastic," beamed the Newmarket-based Haynes. "I wanted ten winners for the year and that's my 17th and to have a Listed winner with my first Listed runner is what dreams are made of; it'll be hard to top that.

"I've got to keep on building for next year though."

Mr Professor had won at Kempton and Bath, but disappointed in Newmarket's Autumn Stakes last time.

"He's a horse who has kept improving this year," added Haynes, who rode a handful of winners on the Flat before she started training. "The straight track at Newmarket is where he's let us down but he just didn't settle there.

"He comes out of his races so well – we weigh ours every Monday and he'd put 8kg on since his last run. He's in the sales next week and he is going to go, we'll see what money there is for him."

Haynes hailed the owners for supporting her and said: "It's great for connections – to have a horse like him in my first year, I can't thank them enough."

Stag Horn shines

The Archie Watson-trained Stag Horn was entitled to win the 2m2f conditions race and the 4-7 chance did so comfortably.

Winning jockey Hollie Doyle said: "That was a really good performance, he felt back to his best. He’s settling better these days and he's grown up a lot. He loves it round here, it keeps him interested.

"It's a big ask to make all the running and he was giving away 8lb as well but he was the best horse on the day."
