'It wouldn't be surprising if we saw a Guineas and Derby winner'
Which of today's two-year-olds can make the biggest impression next year?
I don't think we saw the winners of either the 2,000 or 1,000 Guineas and I still think Thunder Moon is the best two-year-old I've seen so far.
A lot of the pedigrees on show at Newmarket were speedy and precocious, with Alcohol Free by No Nay Never and Supremacy, Method and Minzaal all by Mehmas.
We don't know if his progeny will train on, but if they do then the one to follow going forward must be Minzaal. Compare how he was positioned to that of the winner in the Middle Park and he was set an impossible task out on the wing with a tailwind.
Perhaps connections will contemplate a go at five furlongs but 14-1 for the Commonwealth Cup looks interesting.

We got two smashing rides from Oisin Murphy and Adam Kirby in Saturday’s Group 1s, but I don’t think we saw any champion racehorses at Newmarket and it just reinforces the view that we’re not watching a vintage bunch of juveniles.
Alcohol Free and Supremacy were both all out to win having got first run on their rivals. They’ve got big futures, obviously, but it’d be a surprise if either went on to become superstars.
More interesting was High Definition in the Beresford in Ireland. He’s not the sweetest traveller you’ll see, but he’s clearly got some engine as he had no right to win from where he was at the Curragh.
I would expect him to stay 1m4f on that evidence and it should be all about the Derby with him.

A quick glance through the roll call of Aidan O'Brien-trained winners of the Beresford reveals some stellar names, and the early signs are that High Definition could be very exciting.
Coming from last to first in a maiden is difficult, but not impossible, repeating the feat in a Group 2 requires a lot of ability.
A mile looks the minimum trip, but it wouldn't be surprising if we saw a Guineas and Derby winner in High Definition.
At Newmarket, Method was disappointing, but the saddle slipped and I retain faith that he is a Group 1 winner in waiting, potentially in the Commonwealth Cup.
