'I'm disappointed' - Wesley Ward bemused after Golden Pal flops in Nunthorpe
Wesley Ward made no secret of his high regard for Golden Pal before the Nunthorpe Stakes and he could not hide his disappointment afterwards.
He had hailed the brilliantly speedy sprinter as potentially the best horse he had ever trained and was downcast after Frankie Dettori's mount could finish only seventh behind Winter Power, beaten five lengths, after being headed two furlongs out.
"Frankie said he was waiting for a turn but I can't make any excuses," Ward said. "I was very confident going in. The winner ran a tremendous race and we were disappointed. I really think so highly of this colt. It just wasn't his day. We'll see if any answers come up in the post-race. He looks fine.
