'I'm so surprised' - 125-1 shock at Newbury as Gary Moore lands huge winner
Friday: Newbury
Trainer Gary Moore admitted he was shocked after Oj Lifestyle won at 125-1 in the 7f juvenile maiden at Newbury.
The colt, ridden by Tom Queally, got the better of a tussle with the 4-9 favourite Leadman to prevail by a nose.
"It’s not often you see a horse win at those odds at any track – never mind here. No-one is more shocked than me that he has gone and done it," Moore said.
"We expected better from him on his debut at Ascot and he was very disappointing, but he seems to have grown up since then.
"I'm so surprised by this win that I've had no thoughts about what we might do with him next."
The horse is owned by Omar Jackson and the trainer added: "I’m presuming it’s named after the owner but you would have to speak to him about that. It’s an interesting name and I am surprised they managed to get that through."
Jackson lives in Dubai but made the trip to Newbury in the hope of seeing his two horses, Novus and Oj Lifestyle, in action. The former was a non-runner in the opening 6f novice, but the owner was rewarded soon after.
"When we got here, we knew he had promise. Novus and Oj Lifestyle are my two first racehorses and Gary is a great trainer. I felt very comfortable with him when I first met him," Jackson said after the race.
"As every racehorse owner says, 'I want a winner.' I wanted some horses with promise, and with his guidance we've fulfilled that. The favourite [Leadman] was unbeatable I heard, but everything is unbeatable until it's beaten."
Cornwallis plan
Cuban Mistress made all to gain a first Listed race success in the St Hugh’s Stakes and her trainer Rod Millman is now contemplating moving her up to Group 3 company and having a crack at the Cornwallis Stakes.
“She’s a tough filly but didn’t see out the six furlongs at Ascot last time and she will stay at the minimum trip now,” said the trainer.
“This looked one of the strongest Listed races of the season, so the form should be very good.”
