Friday: Newcastle

Simon and Ed Crisford's excellent record with juveniles was bolstered by a promising double from two debutants.

Chesspiece kicked things off by winning the 1m2f maiden by a length, digging deep under Harry Burns to fend off challenges from Hadrianus and Humanity.

Ed Crisford said: "We're very pleased with his win and he'll be an exciting prospect for next year. We'll put him away now and let him strengthen and see where we go next spring."

Stablemate Mukeedd justified favouritism under David Egan to bring home the double, narrowly denying Back See Daa by a short-head in division two of the 7f novice.

Crisford said: "Newcastle is a lovely galloping track and very fair to ride. It's a nice place to take a horse, especially for the first time out, and they have a good experience there."

'I just wish it was closer'

Heather Main is another trainer who enjoys her visits to Newcastle and Mostly Sunny put a smile on her face by winning the 2m½f handicap under PJ McDonald.

The Wantage-based Main said: "It's very exciting. It opens up a lot of doors now that we know he stays.

"I think the surface suits our horses. I just wish it was a bit closer, it's a long journey."

Red-hot Boughey

George Boughey's strong all-weather form continued as Queen Of Ipanema made it four wins in a row in the 1m4½f handicap.
