You can't keep a good man down, they say. In the case of Aidan O'Brien he could hardly be pinned down for five minutes after Kew Gardens gave him his sixth St Leger victory.

He had barely whipped the saddle from the horse's back before he was off, following in the tracks of Ryan Moore (never a man to hang about lapping up the acclaim) as the two hared off to Ireland for the first day of Irish Champions Weekend.

This was a third British Classic for O'Brien this season, a rather respectable haul by almost any standards, but the Ballydoyle trainer sets no ordinary standard. When he won this race with Capri 12 months ago he was landing his eighth British or Irish Classic of an all-conquering season.
