Sunday: Kempton

Christmas came early for connections of Giavellotto as he caused a 100-1 shock to everyone but trainer Marco Botti and jockey Dylan Hogan when landing the 1m3f novice stakes.

On paper the debutant looked up against it, facing stiff opposition from runners from the Charlie Appleby, Andrew Balding and John and Thady Gosden stables, but he stayed on stoutly from the rear to win by three-quarters of a length.

Botti said: “To be honest I couldn't believe the price. He's shown ability in the mornings and I thought he was in with a chance. We knew before the race he would stay well.”

When asked if he took advantage of the bumper price, he added: “Sadly, I'm not a brave gambler, I didn't want to jinx it, so I only had £1 each-way.

“The lad who rides him and took him to Kempton had £5 each-way, he was over the moon – a nice Christmas bonus for him.”

Dylan Hogan, having his best year numerically, was also confident in his mount.

“Dylan said to his agent whenever the horse is entered, 'Please get me on'. He knew he was quite nice – he was right,” said Botti.

Botti has earmarked a venture to his native Italy for the Group 2 Derby Italiano as a potential target for the son of Mastercraftsman.

He added: “If all goes well the owners, who live in Italy, are thinking about the Italian Derby. Time will tell how good he is, but there is plenty to look forward to next season.”
