Magny Cours hangs on in Gala to continue big day for William Buick at Sandown

Magny Cours held off the challenge of Aspetar and Fox Chairman to strike in the Listed Gala Stakes for Andre Fabre, as William Buick celebrated another victory 30 minutes after Ghaiyyath's Eclipse win.

The five-year-old proved his ability last month when beating the highly regarded Persian King by a short neck in the Prix de Montretout at Chantilly, and showed his class again this time.

Dubai Warrior was he early leader but ran out of puff turning for home which opened the door for Magny Cours to step forward. Aspetar was hot on his tail along with Fox Chairman but the Godolphin runner held on to score by a neck.

It was more disappointment for Frankie Dettori as he was unable to navigate favourite Global Giant through the traffic and had to settle for fourth.

Montatham gets revenge on Dark Vision in thrilling Coral Challenge

Montatham secured a measure of revenge on Dark Vision after holding on to win the Coral Challenge at Sandown in a thrilling finish.

The William Haggas-trained four-year-old finished second to Dark Vision in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot last month but was 3lb better off this time, which proved the difference.

Montatham took the lead around a furlong out with his Godolphin-owned rival gaining on him with every stride, but the line came just in time for jockey Jim Crowley and his mount won by a short head.

Gallipoli finished his race well to take third at 33-1 for Richard Fahey.

Manuela De Vega comfortably wins Lancashire Oaks

Manuela De Vega showed her class to win the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock for Ralph Beckett.

Only five lined up in the Group 2 contest after Beckett's other runner, Antonia De Vega, was a late non-runner with the Ed Vaughan-trained Dame Malliot also taken out.

That saw Manuela De Vega go off at 1-2 and the four-year-old justified those short odds when pulling away from the rest of the field about a furlong out to score comfortably by five and a half lengths.

Harry Bentley was in the saddle for the success, having taken the ride from Rob Hornby after Antonia De Vega was withdrawn.

The 28-1 outsider Makawee finished best of the rest in second, while Hereby took third.

Dashing Willoughby stays on to win Henry II under Oisin Murphy

Dashing Willoughby held off the challenge of Spanish Mission to win the Group 3 Coral Henry II Stakes under Oisin Murphy at Sandown on Saturday.

The four-year-old enjoyed some cover from the headwind behind Withhold in the early stages, which could have made the difference as he continued to find inside the final furlong to score by a length and a quarter.

Murphy said: "There's a very strong headwind which is why I was keen to just follow Withhold early on, which played into his hands. He's improving and was a Group 2 winner last year so has done his owners Mick and Janice Mariscotti proud."

Paddy Power reacted to the victory by making Dashing Willoughby a 10-1 shot to win the Goodwood Cup at the Glorious meeting, but he will likely have Stradivarius to contend with on that day.

A'Ali lands Coral Charge as Dettori bounces back from Derby disappointment

Frankie Dettori bounced back from Saturday's Derby day disappointment to win the Group 3 Coral Charge on A'Ali.

The field were taken along by veteran Caspian Prince and Dakota Gold in the early going but there is a mighty headwind at the Surrey track which saw that pair fade in the latter stages.

Liberty Beach had been all the rage in the betting but it was A'Ali who showed a tremendous turn of foot to kick on and strike by a length for Simon and Ed Crisford.

Dettori said: "There's a big headwind out there. You need all the luck in these races at Sandown and I did have some luck. He was a great horse last year and I'm very pleased with him."

Ed Crisford added: "He did it really well today and showed a really good attitude. It was a very good race and he was taking on the older horses for the first time so we're really pleased."

Paddy Power make the winner 10-1 for the Nunthorpe, and Crisford added: "We'll go to the King George at Goodwood next to take on Battaash and throw him in at the deep end - there's not a lot else for him. Then there's races like the Nunthorpe down the line."

Gussy Mac roars home to land Dragon Stakes for Teal

Gussy Mac landed the Listed Dragon Stakes at Sandown for Roger Teal after showing impressive speed inside the final furlong to strike by half a length.

The son of Dark Angel started the race in the rear but gradually picked off his rivals before kicking for home under Jack Mitchell, who was delighted with his mount's efforts.

"He's always had a great attitude," said Mitchell. "He did it really well when he won at Wolves last time and travels really nicely.

"I think six furlongs would be his trip eventually but we came here for this on the off-chance and thankfully it paid off."

Gussy Mac's victory was Roger Teal's seventh Listed/Group success of his training career, but the trainer admitted he was confident of a strong showing from his juvenile.

He said: "We've always liked Gussy Mac and today he's knuckled down and done it very nicely. At home he's very tough and speedy, but does still show signs of greenness where he hits the front and starts looking around.

"I think after today we'll look at stepping him up to six furlongs next time."

Behind Gussy Mac was Significantly, who had to make do with second for the third time in three starts for Karl Burke, while 40-1 outsider Internationaldream got up for third.
