'Good team' Williams and Tudor take more wins back to Wales with 143-1 double
The long trip from south Wales to the Sussex coast was made worthwhile as Christian Williams landed a 143-1 double, headlined by Goldencard's victory in the 2m3f handicap chase.
The eight-year-old made all under a confident ride from Jack Tudor to score by eight lengths and further success followed in the concluding bumper as Midnight Soldier travelled to a smooth success under Tudor.
Despite both horses being sent off at 11-1, Williams admitted he was quietly confident about making the long journey worthwhile.
He said: "This was the perfect race for Goldencard. He is probably not a winter horse as the racing is a bit more competitive, but I am delighted for the owners to give them the win."
Williams, who has already had a 100-1 bumper success this year with Mansoline, was impressed with Midnight Soldier's racecourse debut.
He added: "It is all about trying to get better horses all the time. He has a nice pedigree and looks a very smart horse.
"We’ve got a good team of staff at home, they do most of the training in the summer. It's nice to give them a freer rein and step back, it shows you have got faith in them."
Rare win for Grissell
Local trainer Diana Grissell saddled her first winner since March 2018 as Ballintara refused to be beaten in the 3m2f handicap chase.
The nine-year-old fended off the late challenge of favourite Joey Steel, denying Christian Williams a treble to give Grissell a dream day.
