In a reverse of the David and Goliath fairytale, it was the giant six-year-old Blue Flight who sprung the surprise in beating the smaller and slighter Black Corton in the afternoon's feature, the £60,000 Belhaven Brewery Premier Chase.

With his mark of 157, the Paul Nicholls-trained runner-up was understandably a warm order at 30-100 to beat his three rivals who were all meeting him on at least 10lb worse terms than would have been the case in a handicap.

"I thought he would be third, and I'd have been pleased with that," admitted Blue Flight's owner, Jimmy Fyffe.
