Father's Day celebrations were in full swing in the Bewley family as son and jockey Jonathon steered Classical Milano to a repeat victory in the 3m handicap chase for his father and trainer George.

The ten-year-old won the race in 2018 and returned to winning ways for the first time since winning over course and distance in October 2019 with an exemplary round of jumping under the 3lb claimer, which left Bewley snr delighted.

"Jonathon bought us some chocolates this morning, so if we didn't have a winner I'd have let him off, but I'd take a winner instead every day of the week!" George Bewley said. "We'll have a Father's Day celebration when we get home too, for sure.

"He ran really well here a fortnight ago and it put him right for the day. I'm chuffed to bits with him."

Joy for Johnsons

The family feel of the day was not just restricted to dads and lads as the husband-and-wife team of trainer Kenny and jockey Alison Johnson landed the 2m conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle with Sweet Flora.

"This family affair makes winning so much better, without a doubt," the Newcastle-based trainer said.

"We put our heart and souls into this. We've had problems with the horses, but we nailed what was wrong and now we're on the right track."

Hexham hundred for Hughes

Brian Hughes brought up a personal milestone as he rode his 100th winner at the track when Ming Dynasty landed the 1m7½f beginners' chase for Brian Ellison.
