Big day for Mark McDonagh as conditional rides first career double
It was an afternoon to remember for 7lb claiming conditional Mark McDonagh as he registered a first career double from two rides – the opening winner coming through a spare ride on in-form hurdler Coolnacritta.
Mike O'Connor, reportedly sidelined with a collarbone injury after a Punchestown spill on Tuesday, was initially set to partner the Mark Fahey-trained six-year-old. However, McDonagh received the call-up and guided the recent Fairyhouse scorer to a third win in nine career starts.
"Mark Fahey is doing a very good job with him," said the 20-year-old rider.
"He's progressing and has come forward from his couple of runs in England, so hopefully he can improve again."
Well-backed 7-2 chance Nell's Well, trained by Sean O'Brien, brought up the second leg of McDonagh's quick-fire brace as she opened her account under rules in the 2m4½f mares' maiden hurdle.
McDonagh said: "I'm delighted to get my first winner for Sean. He trains some horses for our family and I think he's a very good trainer. It's great for the mare to get her head in front."
Queally and Mullins double up
There was double delight for trainers Declan Queally and Willie Mullins.
Young Fitzy got off the mark in the opening 2m maiden hurdle and course-and-distance winner Owenacurra Lass took advantage of her falling mark to register her third career win in the 2m4½f handicap hurdle for Queally.
Mullins rounded off the card with a 2m5½f beginners' chase win for Recite A Prayer on his debut over fences and a 2m bumper breakthrough for Tempo Chapter Two.
