Back of the net! Neild scores late first winner of the season in family success
The emotions of scoring an extra-time winner are rarely topped, but footballer-turned-jockey Jamie Neild may argue otherwise as he notched a last-gasp first winner of the season to the delight of his biggest supporter – his father.
The 10lb claimer played for Liverpool at youth level, but has since carved out a career in the saddle and notched a first victory in 399 days on Nye Bevan, who ended a long losing streak himself in the 2m1½f handicap hurdle, with just over a week left of the campaign.
It was a third career success for Neild and his father, John – famed for owning Splash Of Ginge and leading the 'Ginge Army' – placed his son's success alongside the best days he's experienced in racing.
"I was more nervous today than I was for Splash Of Ginge's big victories, I screamed him home," he said. "When your son rides a winner for you, it feels like winning at the Cheltenham Festival.
"He and the horse could've gone the whole season as maidens! Jamie had the classic thing of being released by his club and didn't know what to do with his life. He didn't sit on a horse until he was 19 and has done so well to get a licence, let alone ride in races."
The 'Ginge Army' are used to wild celebrations and it will be no different this time, despite current Covid-19 restrictions.
He added: "We'll find a suitably large beer garden to cope with all of us. With social distancing, we have to celebrate wildly on separate tables!"
Schnabel settles the score
The Matt Sheppard-trained Schnabel was awarded his previous Fontwell victory in the Stewards room, but extra assistance was not required in the 3m2f handicap chase as he romped home.
