Apprentice Marco Ghiani enjoyed a landmark day on the Norfolk coast when riding out his claim on the previously frustrating Surprise Picture in Thursday's featuring mile handicap.

He reached the milestone of 95 winners, made up of 94 domestic victories and one in his native Italy, when coming from last to first on the Hugo Palmer-trained 3-1 chance.

The 22-year-old, who is attached to Stuart Williams, is going full tilt at the apprentice title and this win puts him on 24 for the season, eight clear of his nearest challenger Mark Crehan.

Ghiani said: "It's nice to finally ride out my claim, although I thought it'd be on Manettino in the previous race rather than Surprise Picture as he doesn't win very often."

Ghiani started out with Luca Cumani in 2017 but has really taken off since he joined Stuart Williams the following year. He said: "Thanks to Stuart I've really got going since lockdown and it was great to ride my first winner at Royal Ascot on Real World in the Hunt Cup."

Williams said: "I'm delighted for Marco as he's a really hard-working young man and is dedicated to being a jockey. I'm pleased he's ridden out his claim and I expect him to make it as a fully-fledged jockey."

'I was on cloud nine after Ascot but I'm probably on cloud ten after that'

Racing manager Armando Duarte rounded off a fortnight to remember when breeze-up purchase Maglev carried the M M Stables colours to a narrow win in a competitive 6f novice stakes.

The William Haggas-trained 4-1 shot was carrying the same silks as Royal Ascot-winning stablemate Alenquer, and came from nowhere to snatch the spoils from Home City.

Duarte said: "I was on cloud nine after Ascot but I'm probably on cloud ten after that. We only have five horses in training and this fellow cost 210,000gns which is a lot for us. It's been quite a couple of weeks and hopefully Maglev can go up the ladder like Alenquer."

Haggas' wife Maureen said of the Tom Marquand-ridden winner: "He did well to win as things didn't go well early when he clipped heels. He was still green and will learn from this."

Booth in the money

Owner Phil Booth certainly knows his way to the Norfolk track as he was previously an owner with Luca Cumani and visited the now-closed fish restaurant prior to racing in his younger days.

Hertfordshire-based Booth now has some of his team with Cumani's former assistant David Simcock including Toora Loora who registered a first win in the opening apprentice race under Alex Jary.

Booth said: "I used to come with Luca to the fish restaurant which was usually very expensive for me as he always passed the bill my way. I had £150 each-way on this filly which I could've done with then but I thought she was overpriced. The lad gave her a lovely ride and she deserved that."

It was a very local win for the apprentice who is attached to Michael Bell. He said: "I'm from Loddon which is just up the road from here and it was nice that my mum and grandad are here to watch."
