King Golan was well supported into 5-6 favouritism before the 3m1f conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle and duly rewarded backers when winning on his first start for Richard Newland.

It was a first victory for the ten-year-old since striking at Hexham over fences in September 2019 and he came home two and a quarter lengths ahead of Ali The Hunter under Charlie Hammond.

He could reappear quickly as he holds an entry at Market Rasen in the 2m4½f handicap hurdle on Friday.

Hammond said: "Maybe I should have sat and made him pop it but he knows what he's doing. He's ten and has been around plenty, if he couldn't figure it out there's no chance of me figuring it out anyway!

"It's a massive turnaround in form and he's the sort of horse the boss does well with. We wouldn't have too many horses rated 76, but he's a horse who's been rated a lot higher so to run off that today was probably the time to catch him."

Sip tastes success

The consistent Just A Sip got the better of Taboo in a thrilling finish to the 2m7½f mares' handicap chase, making her first chase start a winning one.

The daughter of Great Pretender showed a plucky attitude to win by a neck and provide the team with a home success as Greatrex's wife, Tessa, owns the six-year-old.

There was a dramatic incident when Hot Ryan refused and fell in the open ditch, although she and rider Bryan Carver emerged unscathed.
