50-1 shot given race after winner thrown out to despair of 16-year-old jockey

Joy was short-lived for 16-year-old rider Fern O’Brien, who passed the post in front on her first ride over fences only to be disqualified after losing the weight cloth.

The unfortunate incident occurred on the home turn of the 3m1½f hunter chase when her mount Grageelagh Girl, trained by father Fergal, was travelling comfortably the best. The race was instead awarded to second home and 50-1 outsider Write It Down after an objection from the clerk of the scales.

Due to the loss of the weight cloth, O’Brien weighed in at 9st 10lb having weighed out at 11st 2lb and therefore was disqualified, although no further action was taken by the stewards.

The rider’s father said: “You’ve got to take the positives, she gave the horse a very good ride. She was very good and it wasn’t her fault the saddle slipped. It’s one of those things.

“It’s a real shame for her. She gave her a beautiful ride and was very good over a fence and that’s her first ride in public over fences, she’d ridden in one hurdle race and the rest of her rides had been on the Flat.”

Repeat treble

Fresh from riding out her 5lb claim with a treble for Jimmy Moffatt at the track on Saturday, Charlotte Jones repeated the feat to continue a blistering start to the season for last term’s leading rider and trainer at the Cumbria track.

Jelski emphatically followed up a win at Haydock in March, coming from last to first under a patient Jones ride in the 2m6f handicap hurdle, before former Godolphin performer Battle Of Toro struck for the first time over obstacles in the 2m1f novice hurdle.

The 101-1 treble was completed by stable debutant Vocal Duke in the finale, although it could have been a four-timer had part of Saturday’s treble Rapid Flight not been edged out by the Derek Fox-ridden All About Joe in a photo-finish.
