'Why not the Guineas?' - Roger Fell dreaming big with Eldrickjones
Roger Fell is dreaming of a potential tilt at next year’s 2,000 Guineas with Coventry Stakes runner-up Eldrickjones, who got off the mark at the seventh time of asking under Mark Crehan in the 6f maiden stakes.
The 2-13 favourite in the four-runner affair, the two-year-old got the job done to win by two lengths, although Crehan received a two-day ban for careless riding.
The maiden success came as a relief for Fell, who felt that Nick Bradley’s colt would have learned a lot from the experience.
“I think Eldrick needed to go and enjoy himself at the races," he said. "They tried to make it quite hard for us actually; they were trying to take us wide all the time. He responded and he will be a better horse for that.
"He’s run in some good races this season and done okay. He's a proper horse but he's a bit of a thinker and I think that would have done him the world of good.
"He needs to go and win another now to get some confidence. We’ll go and win a novice over 6f, hopefully, then give him a go at a mile and if dreams come true, why not the Guineas? It’s what people are in racing for. Dreams can come true, can’t they?"
Fell completed a double when Oso Rapido, ridden by Jason Hart, took the 6f handicap to win for the second time this year since switching from David O’Meara.
Jubilant Johnston
Mark Johnston and Joe Fanning combined for a 49-1 double as Living Legend obliged in the 1m2f handicap before Approachability won the mile novice stakes.
