What was your big takeout from the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown?

'Poetic Flare is in for a big autumn'

While the most obvious talking points from the race will revolve around St Mark's Basilica and Tarnawa's next assignments, something that may not be discussed as much is the chance Poetic Flare could take the upcoming big global mile contests by storm.

Altough he was not beaten far on his first attempt at a mile and a quarter, his gallant effort was enough to suggest a return to a mile will suit and he is likely to have a clash against Palace Pier in the QEII on Champions Day lined up next.

But I'd be keen for Jim Bolger to target an international programme as rattling fast ground races such as the Breeders' Cup Mile, Hong Kong Mile and even the Dubai Turf could suit him perfectly.

Given he's the new 'iron horse' and thrives on being busy, such an ambitious campaign may be slightly more realistic than one would imagine.

Watch: St Mark's Basilica triumphs in thrilling Irish Champion Stakes

'5-1 about Tarnawa looks excellent value'

Considering she was facing the dominant 1m2f horse of the season in St Mark's Basilica and the top-class miler Poetic Flare in a race which favoured speed over stamina, Tarnawa's narrow defeat deserves upgrading.

She would have preferred a greater staying test and thrives over a mile and a half so her Arc claims have been enhanced by this performance.

It is also unlikely she would have been trained to peak for the Irish Champion and 5-1 about Dermot Weld's star at Longchamp looks excellent value, particularly given second favourite Adayar's far from ideal preparation.

St Mark's Basilica survives stewards' inquiry to land Irish Champion

'Tarnawa should be favourite for the Arc'

Whatever happens at Longchamp on Sunday, no horse with Arc pretensions will achieve as much this weekend as Tarnawa did in pushing St Mark's Basilica all the way.

The winner could have serious claims to being the best horse in Europe over not just ten furlongs but also a mile, especially as the race at Leopardstown turned into a real burn-up, in which Poetic Flare also played a full part.

The fact a filly with two Group 1 wins at a mile and a half under her belt got those two so hard at it, means Tarnawa should now be favourite for the Arc.
