'We started screaming' - Ben Brody defies 500-1 in running to storm to success

David Jeffreys was adamant Ben Brody was booked for minor honours in the two-mile handicap hurdle but his veteran stable star motored home to a remarkable victory despite hitting 500-1 in running.

The 11-year-old looked held by Alborkan in the closing stages, but a sloppy error at the final flight proved costly for the leader – who went as low as 1.03 on the Betfair exchange – and was reeled in inside the final half-furlong by Ben Brody to win by a length under Archie Bellamy.

"I 100 per cent thought we'd be second," Jeffreys said. "I watched it with my head lad and you know what it's like with this game; we'd have certainly been very happy with second, then we started screaming again.

"It's great credit to the horse, he's an absolute dude. He's 11-years-old but remains the most enthusiastic one we have on the gallops."

Ben Brody's win proved the perfect tonic for the Worcestershire-based trainer, having moved yards to near Evesham earlier this year.

He added: "It's going all good now, he's the first one we fancied to win since the move, and he delivered. We've moved back to the farm at home as I was renting a yard in Stow-on-the-Wold before."

Storming Skeltons

Dan and Harry Skelton continued their fine form when teaming up for a treble, headlined by Cousu Main's wide-margin victory in the opening division of the two-mile maiden hurdle.

The duo also landed the 2m4f mares' handicap hurdle with Dorisa Queen and the 2m4f novice hurdle with Get A Tonic.
