'The plan is to take him to Dubai' - international aim for Missed The Cut
Saturday: Lingfield
Missed The Cut treated a sun-soaked Surrey crowd to a track record when putting Algiers in the shade in the featured Listed Churchill Stakes.
The 5-4 favourite overcame a wide draw and an equally wide trip under Jim Crowley to make up at least seven lengths in the straight to get up in the final stride to beat Algiers a short head.
Winning trainer George Boughey was thinking of equally sunny climes for his progressive three-year-old after his victory.
Missed The Cut had racked up a three-timer on the turf in the summer, after which he was not disgraced when finishing fifth to the subsequent Arc fourth Al Hakeem in a Group 2 in France.
Newmarket trainer Boughey said: "I didn't know if he'd won to be honest, but I wanted Jim to take his time from the draw rather than rush him up early.
"He had a blip in the summer but has needed to hit every target since, and he has done with racecourse gallops here and at Chelmsford."
He added: "The plan is to take him to the carnival in Dubai where we'll see how he trains on the dirt before we decide which surface to race him on. He's dirt bred and today was his first run on the all-weather, so he's pretty versatile. "
Golden oldies
The finish of the Listed Golden Rose Stakes concerned a couple of old boys headed by Summerghand, who became the oldest winner of the 6f race at the age of eight.
The well-backed 2-1 favourite had a productive year on the turf and carried that form into the all-weather arena when holding off the ten-year-old Judicial.
David O'Meara's consistent sprinter got a dream rail run in the straight under Danny Tudhope to book his place in the field for All-Weather Championships finals day at Newcastle in the spring.
Tudhope said: "Summerghand has been an exceptional servant for all connections and seems as good as ever. I'd imagine he'll be off to finals day in April."
Rausing on a roll
Just two days after the retirement of her flagbearer Alpinista, Kirsten Rausing was back among the winners when Empress Wu sprang a 16-1 surprise in the 1m2f maiden stakes.
The performance was all the more creditable from the David Simcock-trained newcomer as she was drawn widest of all in stall 14.
Winning jockey Crowley, who later doubled up on Missed The Cut, said: "I dropped her in from her draw and it was either going to happen or it wasn't. She showed a nice turn of foot and is from a good family."
'Special' winner
Paddy Bradley steered Reeceltic to land a gamble in the closing 2m handicap for trainer Pat Phelan and owner John White.
He said of the winner, who was backed into 100-30 from 10-1 in the morning: "Mr White hasn't had a lot of luck with his horses until now and I would say he isn't averse to a gamble. He's my sponsor and Pat gave me my first winner, so this is special."
