Shadwell and Jim Crowley celebrate double on mixed day for Kieran O'Neill
Shadwell Estate and its retained rider Jim Crowley enjoyed a fine afternoon as they landed a quickfire double for trainers Owen Burrows and William Haggas.
Asadjumeirah, a half-brother to 2017 Royal Ascot winner Heartache, took the step up to six furlongs in his stride with a confident half-length victory over the favourite Strongbowe.
His trainer Burrows credited the input of jockey Kieran O’Neill for the change in trip, and said: "Kieran rode him at Bath the time before against those experienced handicappers said to step him up in trip and fair play to him he was correct.
"On breeding it’s there for all to see that he’s related to some quality five-furlong horses. Jim said physically he’s improving and that he felt a real difference today.
"It’s a slightly different year, we have not got as many horses with everything going on with Shadwell which has been well documented."
Global racing operation Shadwell is still coming to terms with the death of Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and announced this year that they were scaling back interests, predominantly across Australia and South Africa.
The double was completed when the Haggas-trained Taraashoq justified 9-4 favouritism in the 1m½f novice.
Places reversed
O’Neill may have played a part in Shadwell's success on the day, but he was out of luck after his ride on the 28-1 outsider Muhalhel, who was first past the post in the 1m½f handicap but subsequently demoted to second with the race awarded to the Alan King-trained Dickens in the stewards' room.
Muhalhel, trained by Alice Haynes, was judged to have interfered with the runner-up after drifting to his left and O'Neill was handed a two-day ban for careless riding.
