Popular veteran sprinter Danzeno back to his best for trainer Mick Appleby
Mick Appleby may have lost one stable stalwart this weekend but his yard has another veteran sprinter still thriving as Danzeno landed his second win this season.
The trainer announced the retirement of Epsom Dash winner Caspian Prince on Saturday but it was Ray Dawson and the popular ten-year-old Danzeno who took centre stage on Tuesday.
Appleby said: "We just retired Caspian Prince who was 12, so Danzeno is now one of the oldest we have in training. We've had him since he was a yearling, his whole training career. He still enjoys his work and he's been so consistent with us."
Danzeno may have been out of his depth in some top handicaps this season, including in the Wokingham and the Stewards' Cup, but recorded his ninth win almost eight years after his first.
"He did it well today," Appleby added. "I think he's probably just better in those smaller races these days, his last two races were two big handicaps and this is about his level, but he's definitely got a few more races in him yet."
Danzeno's biggest success came in the 2014 Group 3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle.
Century for Probert
It was the 100th winner of the year for David Probert as Typewriter stormed to success for in-form trainer Andrew Balding.
Probert, who surpassed last year's tally at Newmarket on Saturday, reached the three-figure landmark for the fourth time in his career.
The 32-year-old jockey will have his eyes on setting a new annual record, sitting only 12 wins away from his highest tally in 2019.
