Newmarket's newest joint-training partnership off the mark in style

Alpha King got Newmarket's newest training combination of Peter Charalambous and James Clutterbuck off the mark when making every yard in the opening hands and heels apprentice handicap.

The well-backed 11-2 chance did not see anther rival under a polished ride from Connor Planas, who is attached to the Tom Clover yard and was registering a third career victory.

The partnership was winning at the 17th attempt after joining forces in April at Pond House Stables in Exning where they have an 11-strong team.

Clutterbuck must have known a winner was just around the corner as he has recently taken delivery of branded clothing to further advertise the new business.

He said: "We're over the moon to be off the mark and especially with Alpha King as he's not the easiest to train. Connor gave him a great ride and we decided to make the running after he ran well under similar tactics at Bath last time."

The joint-trainer added: "We're at Pond House Stables, which my father owns, at the moment but if anything suitable comes up in Newmarket we'll be looking to move as it's difficult to get staff to come to Exning. We have 11 horses with six more out at pre-training and we'll be looking to buy at the July sales next week."

Jarvis's 50-1 stunner

Favourites had a decent past record in the 6f novice stakes but Pembrokeshire came from the other end of the market to spring a 50-1 surprise on his debut for William Jarvis and Neil Callan.

The son of Iffraaj was one of the cheapest purchases in the field at 28,000gns but you would not have known it the way he outgunned fancied rivals Princeville and €520,000 purchase Lord Uhtred.

The winner was giving Jarvis his first juvenile winner of the season at just the third attempt and carries the colours of part-owner Patrick Dalby.

Jarvis's assistant James Toller told Sky Sports Racing: "Pembrokeshire had been going nicely at home but you never know what you're taking on.

"They looked a nice bunch in the paddock and that was a very pleasing performance first time out. We'd only run two two-year-olds before this and they finished third and fourth so the team are doing well. Patrick was a big supporter of mine when I was training so it's nice to get a win for him."

Apt winner

Roger Varian has been a big backer of stable staff week so it was apt he won the Supporting Stable Staff Week Handicap with Islay Of Anglesey. The 15-8 favourite was making his turf debut when scoring handily in the mile contest under Ray Dawson.

Dawson doubled up in the next race when Cubanista won the following 7f handicap for Pam Sly.
