McCain form continues as daughter Abbie seals hat-trick on Geromino
Saturday: Huntingdon
Donald McCain has enjoyed a blistering start to the season and the form of the yard was highlighted again when the trainer's daughter Abbie landed the 2m female jockeys' handicap hurdle aboard Geromino.
The 9-4 favourite completed a hat-trick when making all to hold off Kamaxos by two and a half lengths.
“It’s good to get the hat-trick up.” Abbie McCain told Racing TV.
“He won over two and a half miles the last day. I spoke with Brian [Hughes] this morning and he said just remember he stays well, I went through the line and I couldn’t pull him up.
“It’s lovely to get a winner for Mr Fitzpatrick [owner]. He messaged me last night saying ‘good luck, go and enjoy yourself,’ I enjoyed every minute of it. Dad’s just had a Listed winner at Haydock so he’ll be in a good mood.”
Geromino had been earmarked as a future chaser and McCain added: “The plan was for him to have his first run over hurdles and then send him chasing, but he kept winning.”
On the female only race, won by Rachael Blackmore in 2016, she said: “I’ve ridden in it nearly every year, it’s great for all of us to get a chance to ride a higher calibre horse.”
Shorter wait
Toby Bulgin waited 32 years to return to the winner's enclosure after Luckofthedraw won at Fontwell last weekend. He only had to wait six days for the flashy grey to do it again as the 7-2 chance bolted up by 20 lengths to win the 2m4f handicap chase under Jordan Nailor.
