Sunday: Leicester

Fergal O’Brien could not have asked for a better day after all three of his runners on the card won.

Flann, Marble Sands and Gortroe Joe were all too strong for their rivals as the Gloucestershire-based trainer completed a treble to move on to 90 winners for the season.

O’Brien is edging closer to last season’s personal best of 128 and is delighted with how the campaign is going.

He said: "You’ll always be so close to something happening which makes you slow down, but the horses are all happy and healthy at the minute and running so good – and long may it continue.

"It was fantastic and great to get to 90 winners already. We had some nice horses there and it was good to see Flann get his first win for us.

"Marble Sands won again after doing it well at Hereford last time out, while Gortroe Joe has been an absolute star for us, and it’s great for Terry Warner [owner] and Liam Harrison [jockey] as well, as he gets on so well with him."

Marble Sands made it two wins in as many starts this season after scoring in the 2m4½f novice hurdle and O’Brien is excited about his future.

"He’s a second-season chaser and the better the race, the better you’ll see him," he added.

Up and running

The Jennie Candlish-trained Bridge Road landed the 1m7½f handicap hurdle to get off the mark at the 12th attempt over jumps.

Heading into the contest, the six-year-old had finished runner-up in four hurdle races, but he ended that run by finishing four lengths clear of Martin Spirit.
