Monday: Kempton

After landing his first Group 1 this year and claiming a new career-best winning tally, James Ferguson is keen to keep the good times rolling after Yellowbrick Road stormed to success on his debut at Kempton.

The two-year-old is one of just a handful Ferguson has in training over the winter but powered to a one-and-a-quarter-length success under Daniel Muscutt in the second division of the mile novice.

"He's a big, raw horse and still very green," Ferguson said. "He will have learnt plenty and we'll step him up in trip now.

"We only have a few over winter but it's important if they're ready to go then they run. He's shown ability, so it would be a waste to not get a win at his age if we could. He'll aim for a turf campaign next season now."

Ferguson, who sent out his first runners in November 2019, claimed his 23rd winner of the year to better last year's tally of 18, a record bolstered by his first Group 1 success with El Bodegon in October.

"I think it's always important to try and better yourself from the previous season," the Newmarket-based trainer added. "Whatever tally we end up on we need to try and beat in 2022. I think that's the only target you can make."

Chance success

Simon and Ed Crisford continued their hot run of form as Chance surged past the field to pip United Front at the line in the feature mile handicap.

The five-year-old benefitted from first-time cheekpieces under Jack Mitchell and score by a neck, landing a third winner from six runs for the Newmarket training partnership.
