'It's not his fault the race cut up' - jockey chuffed as 1-66 shot strolls home
Tuesday: Brighton
Ross Coakley's riding fee for partnering Positive Impact in the 7f maiden was £142.90 and the jockey could hardly have had an easier day's work after the 1-66 shot bolted up as one of the shortest priced winners in British racing history.
Trained in Newmarket by Simon and Ed Crisford, Positive Impact faced just one rival after the withdrawal of Dukedom and the three-year-old had little trouble beating Lady Spiritus.
Sent to the front by Coakley, the Shamardal gelding made all and coasted home by 21 lengths.
The rider said: "He's a nice horse and has bumped into a couple on his last run or two. He had a high mark going into today, but has been working well and it's not his fault the race cut up."
Positive Impact, owned by Mohammed Al Nabouda, earned £3,942 for his stroll and Coakley, speaking to Sky Sports, added: "He's had a nice day at the races and picked up a nice bit of prize-money for what was an easy racecourse gallop. Hopefully he can go on now and be competitive off his mark.
"It felt like a formality and, with those types of winners, it's great to get one for the team, but at the same time it's very much ticking a box. I'm very grateful to Simon and Ed for giving me the ride all the same."
The win is not a record, as two great champions won easily at Newmarket at the record shortest odds of 1-100: Ormonde in the 1886 Champion Stakes (three ran) and Sceptre in the 1903 Limekiln Stakes (two ran).
Tasty Rum
Punters who backed Due A Rum in the 1m2f handicap for three-year-olds were rewarded with a considerably better return than those on Positive Impact as he scored at 16-1 for Eve Johnson Houghton and Cieren Fallon.
