Alchemystique sprang a huge surprise in division one of the 2m maiden hurdle when striking at odds of 125-1 on her hurdles debut for trainer Steph Hollinshead.

The four-year-old was making her first start for her new stable after winning once on the Flat for Joe Tuite.

Hollinshead paid 5,000gns for Alchemystique at the sales in July, and the daughter of Authorized immediately paid back her new connections with a strong late surge under Charlie Hammond to score by three-quarters of a length.

Hammond, who earned his 100th career win at Hexham a fortnight ago, is no stranger to a big-priced winner having won at the same odds on Ballycallan Fame at Wetherby last December.

Watch Alchemystique cause a 125-1 shock for trainer Steph Hollinshead

"I can't believe it to be honest," said a delighted Hollinshead. "She works very well at home. However, I only have two jumps horses in training so it's hard for me to tell how good she is. We tinkered with her wind and her jumping has been very good.

"We knew if she could string everything together that she's shown us at home she could run a perfectly creditable race, but was there confidence to say we could win? Absolutely not.

"I bought her in the summer for some very loyal owners of mine who love their jump racing and I'm absolutely chuffed for them."

Hollinshead is hopeful the victory can be a springboard to an increased presence within jump racing, and added: "It's good for me to get myself on the map when it comes to the jumps horses because I love them, but I don't have many.

"I love my sprinters and Flat horses, but I think we could be a really good jumps yard so it would be nice to have one or two more."
