'I am a bit sore, but I was lucky to walk away' - Callan reflects on mixed day

Fresh from his Shergar Cup success on Saturday, Neil Callan experienced the highs and lows of racing on his visit to Kempton.

The jockey, who took home the Silver Saddle trophy for leading rider at Ascot, landed the mile fillies' maiden on Fariba, just 30 minutes after suffering a nasty fall on James Tate's Take A Stand who was fatally injured in the mile handicap won by Cabinet Maker.

"The fall I had before was bad. I was lucky to ride on because my horse [Take A Stand] broke its leg," said Callan.

"I am a bit sore, but I was lucky to walk away. It just goes to show that you’re never at the top of the tree, so you have to be humble and accept that danger can be around the corner. I am able to go home, but some people aren’t as fortunate."

After being cleared to ride for the remainder of the day, Callan returned to the winner's enclosure with the Kevin Philippart De Foy-trained Fariba.

"It was my first ride for Kevin. It’s nice to get a winner for an upcoming trainer like him — I think he’s a very astute young trainer and one for the future.

"I am trying to re-establish myself by getting as many new faces to ride for as possible so I can get on good horses," he added.

Joy for Johnstons

Cabinet Maker's win was the first part of a 439-1 treble for Derby-winning jockey Richard Kingscote.

Lady Lavina got off the mark at the fifth attempt under Kingscote in the 7f novice while Crackovia made a successful handicap debut in the mile nursery, with the winning trio all trained by Mark and Charlie Johnston.
