'He's up there or just behind the best of them' - Derby entry Kyprios impresses

Cazoo Derby entry Kyprios revealed himself as the latest high-class operator in his family with a smart success in the 1m2f conditions race, earning praise from winning jockey Seamie Heffernan, who placed him high in the Ballydoyle pecking order.

The 15-2 shot, carrying the colours of breeders Moyglare Stud but also part-owned by Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor, is out of the same mare, Polished Gem, as the likes of Free Eagle, Custom Cut, Search For A Song, Falcon Eight, Sapphire, Amma Grace and Valac.

The son of Galileo had impressed when winning a Galway maiden on testing ground last September before disappointing in the Zetland Stakes at Newmarket behind Friday's beaten Classic Trial favourite Lone Eagle.

Heffernan, who picked up a six-day whip ban in the process, said: "He probably did well to win at two but it was great to get him a win and get some experience into him then. He's right up there or just behind the best of them."

Jessica Harrington, who sent out the promising O'Reilly to claim second behind Kyprios, got on the scoresheet in the penultimate 7f handicap with Bopedro, who was returning to winning ways after a brief spell with Satish Seemar.

Bolger bags brace

Vocito didn't get the rub of the green when just denied at Leopardstown last week but he had a deserved change of luck in the third race of the new Gain The Advantage Series for Jim Bolger to complete a double for the trainer.

Winning rider Kevin Manning said: "We were a shade unlucky at Leopardstown but the trip was on the sharp side. He's been knocking on the door, running well without collecting and deserves to get his head in front."

Luke McAteer, successful on the Coolcullen-trained Ivy Avenue 35 minutes earlier, added: "She did it well. I broke smart and got a nice position down the rail, it was fairly simple from there, although we had a bit of a battle with the runner-up on my outside."

Kailash makes breakthrough

The Dermot Weld-trained Kailash bumped into some classy opponents in maidens last saddle, including when second to Ballydoyle Classic hopes Santa Barbara and Cleveland, and he wasn't winning out of turn under Colin Keane.

Assistant trainer Kris Weld said of the 1-2 favourite: "He deserved that. He always runs an honest race and might even get a little further than a mile and a quarter in time too."
