Monday: Wolverhampton

Ismail Mohammed has his sights set on the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes for Never Just A Dream after his victory in the 6f novice.

The son of No Nay Never was kept wide of his rivals by Kieran Shoemark early on but gradually edged over to lead four furlongs out before staying on stoutly to score by a length and a half.

The Newmarket-based trainer believed his juvenile had a good chance of recording a first career win, despite being sent off at 10-1.

"He works very well at home and we know he can be a champion – he has Group potential," said Mohammed.

"We were worried about the draw in stall 11 and I spoke to Kieran about it and our plan worked."

The Gimcrack Stakes at York on August 19 is now on the agenda for Never Just A Dream, who was sent off favourite for his debut at Ascot last month but finished a well-beaten eighth.

"Six furlongs is right for him," said Mohammed. "We have entered him for the Gimcrack and I hope we can get him there. We will give him plenty of time to get fresh for that race.

"We were shocked with him at Ascot on his first start, but I think he was very keen."

Appleby on target

Maylah's victory in the 7f classified stakes brought up a double for trainer Mick Appleby at Dunstall Park.

The four-year-old son of Mayson justified favouritism under apprentice Frederick Larson on his second start for Appleby since joining from Donald McCain's yard.

Mega Marvel provided Appleby with his first winner on the card when landing the 6f claimer under Rossa Ryan.
