If you thought a Gold Cup winner running at Tramore was unusual, you may have been forgiven for thinking you had completely lost your marbles when Tom Queally notched a winner over hurdles.

Fear not, you have not gone mad, as Wednesday was no ordinary day at Tramore. Those who came to catch a glimpse of Al Boum Photo also witnessed Queally ride his first winner back over jumps for his brother Declan when they teamed up with Owenacurra Lass.

The man who will forever be famous for his association with Frankel turned 35 in October and, speaking after taking the 2m5f maiden hurdle with Owenacurra Lass, brother Declan revealed their business wasn’t over just yet.

Declan said: "I told Tom to get his National Hunt licence and we’d give him a couple of spins over Christmas. He looked all right there and hasn’t lost it yet! We’ve a mare running in a Listed bumper coming up soon and he’s going to ride her for us as well.”

Queally, who rode a winner aboard Wacky Sport for his father at Tralee back in 2002, was securing his first win over hurdles in Ireland.

Speaking after making a seamless transition, he said: “I did loads of this when I was younger. I rode a winner for my father on the Flat at Tralee about 17 years ago and it’s nice to get a winner here.

“We discussed it beforehand and felt it was best to angle out for the better ground. She’s a lovely mare and tries hard.

“I won the hurdle race for Flat jockeys twice at Lingfield and do a bit of schooling for Gary Moore, but I certainly wouldn’t say I’m the next Martin Molony!”
