Final Reminder strikes at 50-1 on 'last chance' for Nick Alexander
Final Reminder upset the odds when landing the 3m½f handicap hurdle by a length and a quarter for Glenrothes-based trainer Nick Alexander.
The nine-year-old was sent off at 50-1, but was confidently ridden by Sean Quinlan to claim her first win since 2018.
"I would have backed her if I thought she was going to run like that," said Alexander. "I hoped she'd have done better than her price suggested but I didn't expect that.
"She had a bit of leg trouble so she had a good spell off and we thought we’d go chasing with her but that didn’t really work. The key was going back over hurdles.
"This was probably her last chance if she hadn’t run well, but she enjoyed it. She was idling at the front and it’s great to get her back."
Final Reminder had not won a race since landing a hat-trick three years ago and has had only 15 starts in her six-year career.
Her trainer added: "She won three in a row in the spring of 2018, so maybe we’ll try again now!"
Alqamar a first for Moffatt and Jones
Trainer James Moffatt claimed his first winner of the new season in impressive fashion when Alqamar bolted up in the maiden hurdle by 16 lengths.
The ex-Godolphin runner looks set for a promising summer jumps campaign after giving conditional jockey Charlotte Jones her first Ayr winner.
Cockburn takes garden leave
Grant Cockburn had his final ride before starting out on a new career in landscape gardening when finishing seventh on Memors in the bumper.
The 28-year-old was a regular rider for Nick Alexander and rode 74 winners under rules.
