Bottomweight Farhan – tipped by Pricewise on Friday – justified 9-2 favouritism to become the second shortest-priced winner of the November Handicap this century and provide a first win in the race for Hollie Doyle and trainer John Butler.

Carrying just 8st 3lb, the three-year-old, who has had to settle for second on four of his five starts this year, was not to be denied on this occasion, surging up the centre of the course to take the £70,000 contest as he liked.

A delighted Doyle was pleased to end the home turf season in style, telling Sky Sports Racing: “I rode him very early on in his career and he was just a bit of a boyo, a bit of a playboy, but he’s really come to hand.

“You need a bit of luck in these handicaps as they can be quite messy. You need things to go your way and luckily I was on the best horse in the race. It’s been an awesome way to cap off a great year and thanks to John Butler for putting me on.”

Vasela secures black type

Vasela was overlooked in the market at 22-1 for the Listed Gillies Fillies’ Stakes, but the Juddmonte-owned three-year-old made it 2-2 at the course under Rob Hornby to secure some valuable black type, much to the relief of her trainer Ralph Beckett.

"Leaving her alone and targeting this was a good idea as it turned out,” said Beckett. "I’m delighted she’s got it done because I always thought she was capable of it, but I didn’t get all my ducks in a row."

Hornby’s mount Jouska was first past the post in the other Listed race on the card, the Wentworth Stakes, but unfortunately for trainer Henry Candy, his four-year-old was riderless having unseated Hornby when clipping heels in the first furlong.

The race instead went to the Andrew Balding-trained King’s Lynn, who was recording a second Listed success of the year after landing the Achilles Stakes at Haydock in May.

Trebles for Marquand and Haggas

Tom Marquand matched his fiancee Doyle’s fine end to the turf season by recording a 111-1 treble. Mick Channon’s Wonderful World kicked off a good afternoon for Marquand in the 6f nursery handicap before the William Haggas-trained Boosala built on the promise shown when he won his first two starts as a two-year-old in 2019 to take the 7f handicap at 22-1.

With Haggas having taken the first division of the maiden stakes already with the Shadwell’s debutante filly Kidwah impressing under Jim Crowley, it was left for his stable jockey Marquand to bring up the hat-trick of wins for the pair on Hebrides in the second division with the odds-on favourite duly obliging.
