The second day of the Punchestown Festival could be staged on soft ground if the showers set to fall on the track bring as much rain as expected.

After steady rain fell through Tuesday morning underfoot conditions were changed from yielding to yielding to soft and that description could be amended again on Wednesday.

Racing manager Richie Galway said: "The forecast is unsettled and there is uncertainty about the amount of rain that could be coming. There are showers due but they could be hit and miss.

"The feedback from the jockeys is yielding to soft has been the right description for today but there is the potential for 5mm of rain on Wednesday and with that we could end up soft.

"We will be on a fresh track over hurdles, though, and we'll be opening up ground on the chase course as well."
