I've had shares in horses for 20 years with limited success and the history with Pyledriver started with his dam, La Pyle, whom Philip Hobbs bought off the Flat in France to go hurdling. She had a training accident and was going to the sales, but Kevin Mercer, who owned Usk Valley Stud and is sadly no longer with us, looked at her pedigree and suggested we should breed from her.

He gave us a shortlist of stallions and we chose Harbour Watch and Pyledriver was the first foal. We took him to the sales on Kevin's advice – the plan was to keep the fillies and sell the colts anyway – but we knew there wasn't going to be much interest because Harbour Watch had become unfashionable by then.
