One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to follow at York on Wednesday

One trainer

Roger Varian's team have hit the ground running this season, operating at a 33 per cent strike-rate in March, 22 per cent in April and 29 per cent this month.

It has not all been about quantity either as Varian landed two Derby trials last week with El Drama and Third Realm at Chester and Lingfield respectively, and he kicks off York's Dante meeting with four runners.

The likely Musidora favourite Teona (3.10) stands out after her nine-length victory at Newcastle in November, and she could well topple Santa Barbara as Cazoo Oaks favourite with a strong performance.

Varian won the opening 1m4f handicap in 2016 with Barsanti who developed into a Listed performer, and the trainer will be hoping Shandoz (1.40) can follow a similar trajectory.

Smart sprinter Molatham (2.40) and Lydford (4.50) are Varian's other two runners on the card.

One jockey

Like Varian, Ryan Moore has four chances on the opening day at York including Oxted in the Duke of York Stakes (2.40). Moore finished second on last season's July Cup winner in the Abernant Stakes and maintains the partnership with Cieren Fallon in the middle of a seven-day isolation period.

Moore has ridden 14 winners from his last 48 rides and kicks off the Dante meeting on the progressive My Frankel (1.40) for Sir Michael Stoute. He also rides Hint Of Stars for Kevin Philippart De Foy in the concluding 1m4f handicap (4.50).

Snowfall has not raced since finishing eighth in the Fillies' Mile – she was initially placed third in a saddle cloth mix-up at Newmarket – and she needs to improve for the step up in trip to feature in the Musidora finish for Moore (3.10).

One horse

Although Teona is the likely favourite in the Musidora (3.10), Noon Star is a fascinating contender for Stoute.

Stoute can match Sir Henry Cecil's nine wins in the Group 3 if Noon Star can build on her Wetherby success last month which earned her a Racing Post Rating of 104, 9lb greater than market rival Teona.

Noon Star is a general 8-1 for the Oaks and there is every chance this regally bred daughter of Galileo out of Midday will end the day an awful lot shorter in the Classic betting.

One race

Although the Musidora will impact the Oaks market, it is not a one-race card at York and the Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes (2.40) is a super race in its own right.

Oxted heads the field on Official ratings but can expect stern competition from the likes of Brando, Art Power, Starman and Molathan.
