Multiple Grade 1 winner Jezki makes handicap debut at the age of ten

Following a huge day for his famous colours yesterday JP McManus has six runners in the valuable 2m handicap at Fairyhouse (3.10) with his eight-time Grade 1 winner Jezki heading the weights.

The ten-year-old’s haul of top-level victories include two on this card – the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle in 2012 and the 2013 Hatton’s Grace Hurdle – and today the 2014 Champion Hurdle winner will be running in a handicap for the first time.

His trainer Jessica Harrington said: “I was delighted with his second to Apple’s Jade in the Lismullen Hurdle last time and he’s shown there’s still lots of ability there. He has to carry top weight but is in great form and it will be interesting to see how he fares in a handicap.”

McManus is also represented by Galway Hurdle runner-up Blazer, one of six runners for Willie Mullins, the improving Hearts Are Trumps, Ivanovich Gorbatov, Plinth and Off You Go, whose trainer Charles Byrnes also runs Wonder Laish who is up 17lb for an easy win at Navan.

The Mullins sextet includes Stratum, a smart stayer on the Flat who will be making his handicap debut on only his fourth start over hurdles.

Elliott's strong hand

Gordon Elliott is strongly represented in the Grade 3 Juvenile Hurdle (12.35) with three-time winner Chief Justice and Coeur Sublime who won on his hurdling debut at Down Royal last month.

"We think Coeur Sublime, a horse we like, has improved a lot since Down Royal while Chief Justice has plenty of experience although he has to give weight to all his rivals," Elliott said.

In dual bumper winner Malone Road, Elliott has a leading candidate for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival and for the same owners, Cheveley Park Stud, he gives the highly regarded Envoi Allen his first run in the finale (3.40).

A ten-length winner of his only point-to-point, the gelding faces 13 rivals and Elliott said: "Envoi Allen is a lovely horse and we're looking forward to getting him started but we want to see rain for him."

Elliott is also represented by Soldier At War who ran second on his racecourse debut at Punchestown last month.

The Elliott pair Out Sam, winner of the Cork National last month and fifth in the Troytown Chase on his most recent start, and Rogue Angel are the top two in the weights for the 3m5f Porterstown Handicap Chase (2.10), a race won by Presenting Percy a year ago.

"They're both out-and-out stayers and seem to be in good form. Out Sam ran better than Rogue Angel in the Troytown but we're claiming 7lb off Rogue Angel and, hopefully, that will improve his chance," Elliott said.
