Globetrotter Addeybb sets off on another odyssey in Doonside Cup

Addeybb makes his return from a midsummer break and brings Group 1 form to the table in this Listed race. He is penalised as a result, though, and the Group 1 in which he was second at Royal Ascot last time was probably one of the worst top-level events run this season.

The easy winner of that Prince of Wales's Stakes, Lord North, was thrashed by Ghaiyyath in the Juddmonte International at York last month. Third home Barney Roy might have won two Group 1s since, but both came in Germany with Communique second to him in the Grosser Preis von Baden last time. Communique is a solid Group 2 performer, but a way off Group 1 class.

The fourth at Ascot, Japan, has beaten only one horse home in two small-field Group 1s in his last two starts, while the fifth, Bangkok, was last in the Eclipse on his next start and has not run since.

Addeybb will probably need to be close to his best to concede weight to these rivals and will surely have bigger fish to fry this autumn, so he might not be primed after 94 days off the track.

Fox Chairman is the obvious alternative, but King Power Racing’s retained jockey Silvestre de Sousa has chosen to go to Newbury rather than head to Ayr.

However, De Sousa rides Fivethousandtoone in the Group 2 Mill Reef at the Berkshire track which might say more about that juvenile's potential than it does about Fox Chairman’s chances.

The Andrew Balding-trained four-year-old has always been held in high regard and is one of the better horses owned by King Power. The fact De Sousa has not missed a ride on him in eight starts is further evidence of his ability and Oisin Murphy is not a bad sub to have.

Of the others, Lord Glitters is not the force of old at the age of seven, but he loves cut in the ground and shaped as though in need of a return to this 1m2f when grabbing third spot on the line over a furlong shorter at York last time. The main concern is that he is starting to look vulnerable to improving rivals and is more likely to run a place than win nowadays.

Addeybb returns from summer break to prep for Champion Stakes

Dual Australian Group 1 winner Addeybb has not been in action since finishing a gallant second to Lord North in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot – but he dips his toe in much calmer waters at Ayr.

Trainer William Haggas has a similar campaign in mind for 2021 for his six-year-old, who picks up a 7lb penalty for his Aussie exploits. More immediately, the son of Pivotal is using this as a prep for another crack at the Group 1 Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot next month in which he finished second to Magical a year ago.

Sent on what turned out to be a lockdown-avoiding mission to Australia last March, Addeybb made hay in Sydney when landing the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill before following up in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick, both which came on his favoured easy ground.

He faces six rivals on his return from a late summer break after his only previous domestic outing of 2020 at Royal Ascot.

Regular partner Tom Marquand said: "Addeybb is a cracking horse to be involved with and obviously this is a warm-up for another crack at the Champion Stakes. Hopefully it doesn't dry out too much up there as he needs to get his toe in. When he won his first Group 1 out in Australia he got away with it as they were calling it good to soft, but it would have been called good here. On his second run, though, it was proper soft and he really went through it."

As to his prospects of a return trip to Australia himself, Marquand added: "If he goes back to the autumn carnival I would obviously like to go back there with him, but it's a case of trying to find a way to get there as they are pretty strict with the Covid restrictions right now."

He’s in good form and will enjoy the ground. The trip will be no problem for him either. He's been training very well since his last run and is one we're quite looking forward to.

We are trying a new trip with him and we'll see if he stays or not. It's a big jump up from seven furlongs to a mile and a quarter, but he's shaped as if he may get it in the past and he goes there in good form.
