Frankie Friday: can magic man Dettori dominate Royal Ascot again on day four?
It was a vintage day for Frankie Dettori at Royal Ascot on Thursday as a game victory for Stradivarius in the Gold Cup gave the rider a stunning four-timer. Can Dettori continue to dominate the royal meeting on Friday?
Last Surprise
Albany Stakes (2.30)
7-1
Dettori kicked off the afternoon with Norfolk Stakes glory on A'Ali and he teams up again with Simon Crisford in the opener aboard Last Surprise. This daughter of No Nay Never was an impressive winner on her only start at Lingfield and, with connections scoring with a juvenile on Thursday, she has to be fancied to go close.
Verdict: impressive on only start and no surprise to see Frankie start with a bang.
King Edward VII Stakes (3.05)
5-1
Private Secretary was meant to be Dettori's Derby ride but connections decided to skip the Classic and target the royal meeting with this son of Kingman. He has been impressive this season, winning three from three, and is perhaps Dettori's best chance of the day.
Verdict: solid profile but faces a tough task against Japan.
Advertise has slipped under the radar this season but remains a talented prospect who could run well in the Commonwealth Cup. Martyn Meade's representative won the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes last season and will be suited to the step back in trip after his unplaced effort in the 2,000 Guineas last time.
Verdict: has decent form but this looks a strong contest and may just finish outside the places.
John Gosden's filly has not finished outside the first two this season but she will need to take a big step forward to trouble market leader Hermosa. The daughter of Kingman is improving and anything is possible with Frankie aboard.
Verdict: hard to fancy against dual Guineas winner Hermosa.
No ride
Sandringham Stakes
Dettori will have to let one of his weighing room colleagues have the spotlight in this race.
Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (5.35)
10-1
Ben Vrackie is second favourite for this valuable handicap prize but that could change if Dettori fires in some early winners! This son of Frankel deserves his place near the front of the market having shaped well on his final two starts last season. He is out of Group 1 winner Kinnaird and may prove better than a mark of 104.
Verdict: looks well handicapped but difficult to fancy him on first start of the season.
