Go back to the Wednesday of last year's Royal Ascot meeting and the course was abuzz with news of a huge gamble on Kaboo, who was making his debut in the Windsor Castle Stakes.

Nick Bradley, representing the syndicate who own Kaboo in partnership with Elaine Burke, was quite vocal before the race about the high regard in which the son of More Than Ready was held and Kaboo nearly rewarded those who backed him to 15-2 from 100-1.

A lack of experience ultimately cost the colt any chance of victory, but he still ran a remarkable race for a debutant when finishing sixth of the 27 runners, and only three and a quarter lengths behind winner Chipotle.

Kaboo featured in lots of notebooks after that promising first effort, but he went backwards in the face of stiff tasks on his next two runs, winding up the summer with a disappointing run in the Molecomb.

He finished five places behind Mojomaker in that Goodwood contest, and the pair renew rivalry here, with Kaboo set to go off a hot favourite to reverse the form.

That's because Kaboo, who has a US pedigree and is bred to act on artificial surface, has since gone unbeaten in two outings on Tapeta at Wolverhampton and Newcastle. He won those races by a combined distance of seven and a half lengths and is clearly the one to beat.

Finals day will be next up if he wins here, but Mojomaker won't be a pushover and this should be an exciting rematch between the pair.

What they say

Mick Appleby, trainer of Annaf
We bought him out of the horses-in-training sales and he's shown lots of potential in his homework. It was no surprise how he won first time at Newcastle, and it was either carry a penalty for that in a novice or have a crack at this. We expect him to run well.

Karl Burke, trainer of Kaboo
He looks in great shape. He's stepping up to six furlongs for the first time, which we think he wants, and I think he goes there with a great chance. The plan is to take him and our other horse, El Caballo, to finals day. They have different owners and the final fits in well with what we want to do with both. I would not think Kaboo would run again between now and the final if he wins.

John Ryan, trainer of Lord Vader
We bought him out of Sir Michael Stoute's yard and he ran a nice debut at Lingfield despite missing the break. He has since worked nicely, and although it's a big ask, it was either run in an open maiden where he runs into all the big guns or go for a qualifier. Essentially this is a trial to tell us where we are with him going forward.

David Loughnane, trainer of Mojomaker
He probably needed his first run back at Southwell the other day when we gave him a run over seven furlongs just to blow the cobwebs away. He had some top form in sprints last year and should be suited by going back in trip. Karl Burke's horse looks the one to beat, but we are going there hopeful of a good run.

Harry Dunlop, trainer of Adaay In Asia
We turned her out after her last run at the beginning of October with the intention of bringing her back for a crack at the all-weather championships. She won twice on the artificials last year and we've done plenty with her, but it looks a competitive race. Hopefully she can be in the mix.
