Lucky bet? Jessica Harrington juvenile an eyecatching mover in Phoenix Stakes
Major Flat success is now a common thread of Jessica Harrington's career and more could come her way if the betting for today's Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh is any indication.
Harrington saddles Lucky Vega, who impressed on his debut at Naas and was then second in the Railway Stakes. He could have been backed at 9-1 yesterday for the Group 1, although 8-1 was generally available.
However, those odds were nowhere near in sight this morning and Betfair and Paddy Power's 11-2 was the standout price, with Lucky Vega as short as 4-1 in places, with 5-1 widely available.
The Phoenix Stakes is set to take place on ground described as good to yielding after a dry night at the Curragh.
There had been some yielding places, but officials changed the going to good to yielding this morning and forecast a dry day.
A 6f event for two-year-olds, the Phoenix Stakes (3.10) has a rich history and was won 12 months ago by Siskin, who followed up in this year's Irish 2,000 Guineas.
George Washington struck in 2005 and became a 2,000 Guineas hero at Newmarket the following spring.
A day of classy action also features the Prix Maurice de Gheest, which has the makings of a top-class sprint on paper, while the pick in Britain comes at Salisbury, where the Group 3 AJN Steelstock Sovereign Stakes (3.25) takes place.
Smart colt Duke Of Hazzard, who finished third in Ascot's Summer Mile before coming second in the Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, seems solid at the head of the market. As big as 4-1 with BoyleSports on Saturday, he is 9-4 with that firm now and 2-1 with Betfred, although 5-2 is generally available.
Today's going
Curragh good to yielding
Salisbury good to firm
Thirsk good to firm, good in places
Windsor good to firm, good in places
Downpatrick good
