Savill plan still leaves bleak future for sport's grassroots

Reading about the proposed changes being put forward by “industry heavyweights” (July 28), it seems to me the whole thing is about making more of the racing pie, whatever it is, available to those same industry heavyweights, pretty much leaving the rest to fend for themselves.

Peter Savill has identified three major issues: prize-money not keeping pace with other countries, low field sizes and a drain of equine talent abroad.

As far as prize-money is concerned, we hear all the time about the lack of it in Britain compared to other racing nations, but I don’t remember ever reading a clearly thought-out, comprehensive and objective ­explanation of why that is the case, and then suggesting realistically what can be done to turn the situation around.
