Nick Rust wanted to make a difference and he should be applauded for that
There are some in racing who will be pleased to see the back of Nick Rust. The problem, one they may not wish to acknowledge, is the BHA chief executive was never one of them. They perceived him to be an outsider. Worse than that, he came from the dark side.
What they possibly do not appreciate is Rust has always had their best interests at heart. What they almost certainly do not appreciate is his understanding of those best interests has perhaps on occasions been rather better and more nuanced than their own.
Rust became racing's most important administrator after nearly 30 years in the betting industry. He has received an extremely good salary during his time in High Holborn but could arguably have earned more had he continued in bookmaking.
